MANILA, Philippines -- Defending champion Far Eastern University (FEU), University of the Philippines (UP), and De La Salle University secured the first three semi-final berths after beating separate foes in the UAAP Season 77 men\'s football tournament over the weekend.
Eric Giganto fired four goals as the FEU Tamaraws overpowered the University of Santo Tomas (UST), 6-0, while UP defeated University of the East, 2-0, in the Saturday night game at the Moro Lorenzo Football Field in Ateneo de Manila University.
Giganto took the lead for the league\'s best goal-scorer race with 15 after scoring in the 12th, 35th, 58th, and 62nd minute, while Arnel Amita (16th) and Jess Melliza (46th) also contributed for the Tamaraws.
After a goalless first half, UP got its game going with Vincent Aguilar finding the back of the net in the 53rd minute, and Jinggoy Valmayor netting his 14th goal of the season 13 minutes later.
Greggy Yang and Chuck Uy, meanwhile, netted goals to lift the Green Booters to a 2-0 victory over winless Adamson University at the FEU-Diliman pitch on Sunday.
FEU and UP remain tied at the top of the table with 27 points, although the Tamaraws are ahead due to goal difference. La Salle is at third with 26 points.
National University, meanwhile, moved past Ateneo in the race for the remaining semis berth by beating the Blue Booters, 1-0, on Sunday.
Paolo Salenga nailed a goal in the 29th minute off an Alberto Frias free kick, which turned out to be the winning moment for the Bulldogs. NU now has 23 points, one point clear of the fifth-running Blue Eagles.
Meanwhile, in the women\'s division, UP forged a one-game Finals showdown against titleholder FEU with a 3-1 win over UST.
The Lady Maroons now have 13 points, while the Lady Tamaraws have a league-leading 16 points.
