The UP Fighting Maroons blitzed the DLSU Green Archers, 71-66, for a its second straight victory on Wednesday at the SMART-Araneta Coliseum.
It is the first time since 2005 that the Maroons started with a 2-0 slate, claiming the top spot of the standings after their opening day win against the UE Red Warriors.
Jett Manuel led his squad with 14 points, with Paul Desiderio added 13. Pio Longa chipped in 10, while Diego Dario was effective from range with nine points. UP finished the game with a 41 percent shooting clip.
Prince Rivero spearheaded the Archers' offense with 15 markers, while Andrei Caracut added 12. Jeron Teng was limited to 10 points with a 4 of 12 clip. La Salle also suffered from beyond the arc, hitting just 3 of 24 attempts from deep.
The hosts started out hot, finding their shooters and knocking in their shots for a 49 percent shooting clip at the half en route to a 41-28 lead.
UP continued to pour it on in the third, leading by as much as 17 points as Diego Dario, Gelo Vito and Paul Desiderio found their mark beyond the arc. Late makes from Prince Rivero, Andrei Caracut annd Jollo Go kept La Salle in the game. Heading into the final turn, UP led, 54-42.
Longa and Manuel continued to drain their jumpers, while La Salle tried to stay in the game through Julian Sargent. A Desiderio layup with less than seven minutes left made it a 15-point game anew, 62-47.
La Salle was able to cut the lead to six heading to the final two minutes, with Torres and Rivero converting, 64-58. With 1:10 remaining, Rivero went for another split, but La Salle failed to recover, as Asilum drained two charities to put the game away, 69-61. - GMA News
